What Other Permits Are Required for New Mexico?

Running an oversize or overweight load through New Mexico often triggers other state-specific compliance requirements. If your fleet isn't permanently registered for national compliance programs or if you are an interstate carrier entering the state, you must secure these additional credentials alongside your OS/OW permit to avoid immediate shutdowns at the Port of Entry.

New Mexico Weight-Distance Tax (WDT)

Unlike most states that rely solely on fuel taxes, New Mexico charges a Weight-Distance Tax (WDT) for the privilege of using its highways.

Who Needs It: Any commercial motor vehicle with a Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) over 26,000 lbs operating on New Mexico highways.

How It Works: If you do not have a permanent New Mexico WDT registration, you must secure a temporary New Mexico Weight-Distance Tax permit for your trip. Your OS/OW application will be flagged or denied if your WDT status is not active or covered by a temporary permit.

Temporary Trip & Fuel Permits

If your truck and trailer are not permanently registered under national compliance frameworks, you will need temporary trip and fuel permits at the border:

  • Temporary Trip Permit (In Lieu of IRP): If your truck does not hold a permanent International Registration Plan (IRP) registration (apportioned plates) that includes New Mexico, you must purchase a temporary trip permit to legally enter the state.
  • Temporary Fuel Permit (In Lieu of IFTA): If you do not hold a permanent International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) decal and registration, a temporary fuel permit is mandatory to cover your fuel tax obligations while operating within state lines.
